Cisterna di Latina, Where Innovation and Design Meet Sport

Corbo Group brings together architectural design, innovation and safety in the development of the Cisterna di Latina Sports Arena.

The Cisterna di Latina Sports Arena brings together architectural design, technological innovation and safety in a single project. Through its construction, Corbo Group applied a range of advanced building techniques, adapting the original design during construction to further enhance the safety of athletes, spectators and everyone using the facility. “Construction began in 2008,” explains Dr Roberto Corbo. “However, following the L'Aquila earthquake, we decided to introduce additional seismic safety measures. Today, the arena hosts top-division volleyball and basketball matches.”

The arena was developed on a former industrial site in Cisterna di Latina, as part of a wider effort to regenerate the area and return it to public use. This forward-looking investment has contributed to the town's sporting development over the years. With a construction cost of approximately €5 million, the arena has a seating capacity of 3,000, a 60-metre structural span and a glulam roof structure. Its innovative engineering solutions make it a noteworthy example of contemporary sports infrastructure.

Additional seismic safety measures were incorporated into the original design, developed in collaboration with a leading university to further enhance the building's structural performance. “This was one of the first construction projects in which we used self-compacting concrete,” explains Corbo Group's CEO. “This material provides improved filling of voids and hard-to-reach areas. We also had to address a number of complex technical challenges.”

Energy Efficiency and Thermal Insulation

One of the most significant technical challenges associated with large indoor sports facilities is ensuring effective ventilation and thermal comfort. Through an integrated approach combining building services engineering and thermal insulation, Corbo Group developed a comprehensive solution to optimise the arena's thermal performance. Particular attention was given to the thermal transmittance of both opaque building elements, including external walls, and transparent elements, such as windows. Together with a specially designed ventilation system, these solutions allow the building to be heated and cooled more rapidly and efficiently, helping maintain comfortable indoor conditions regardless of external temperatures.

Acoustic Comfort in Large-Scale Spaces

Acoustic performance was another important challenge, particularly given the substantial internal volume of the sports arena. Corbo Group addressed this through a series of targeted technical solutions developed during construction, improving acoustic comfort and ensuring that the facility could effectively accommodate sporting events and large audiences.

“Through this project, we had the opportunity to work across the full spectrum of engineering disciplines, carefully addressing every aspect of construction,” concludes Roberto Corbo. “From the regeneration and remediation of the former industrial site to the integration of the new sports arena into the urban environment, every phase required a coordinated and comprehensive approach.” The Cisterna di Latina Sports Arena demonstrates Corbo Group's ability to manage complex construction projects, combining structural engineering, innovative materials, energy efficiency and urban regeneration.
