Ponte Felcino, A New Bridge Connecting Nature and the City

Discovering Perugia's natural landscapes on foot or by bicycle, crossing the River Tiber on a modern, technologically advanced bridge. Built by Corbo Group, the new Ponte Felcino pedestrian and cycle bridge combines structural engineering, environmental responsibility and sustainable mobility.

The new Ponte Felcino pedestrian and cycle bridge, built by Corbo Group and officially opened in 2024, provides a valuable connection between the two banks of the River Tiber. The bridge has become an important addition to Perugia's network of walking and cycling routes, offering residents, cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts a new way to explore the area's natural landscapes.

The bridge features a robust three-span steel structure, designed to echo the shape of the former masonry bridge. Supported by two reinforced concrete piers and abutments on either bank, the structure measures 94 metres in length and 4 metres in width. Its load-bearing capacity also allows emergency vehicles to cross when necessary. The two main supporting girders are made of welded weathering steel, commonly known as Corten steel, while the bridge is positioned at an angle of approximately 15 degrees to the river's course. The deck features an architectural concrete surface designed to complement the distinctive colours and tones of the weathering steel.

The project was developed in compliance with the environmental restrictions applicable to the surrounding area. Detailed geological and seismic investigations were carried out to assess the ground conditions and ensure the structural reliability of the bridge's foundations. Particular attention was given to the integration of the new infrastructure into the natural landscape, balancing engineering requirements with environmental protection.

Smart Technology for Structural Monitoring

The bridge incorporates an advanced structural monitoring system designed to support efficient maintenance and long-term safety. Accelerometers continuously collect data on the structure's dynamic behaviour, transmitting the information in real time to a dedicated software platform. The sensors are powered by a photovoltaic system, providing a renewable energy source for continuous monitoring. This technology enables the bridge's structural performance to be monitored over time, supporting a proactive approach to infrastructure maintenance.

Connecting Nature, Mobility and Community

The Ponte Felcino bridge plays a strategic role in enhancing Perugia's walking and cycling network. By connecting the two banks of the River Tiber, the bridge links existing nature trails to create a network extending over 17 kilometres, combining environmentally compatible paved surfaces with unpaved paths. Pedestrians and cyclists can now enjoy a more continuous route through the natural landscape, avoiding urban road sections that previously interrupted their journeys.

A Wider Vision for Landscape Enhancement
The Ponte Felcino project forms part of a broader programme comprising four development phases, two of which were entrusted to Corbo Group. The programme aims to improve accessibility while enhancing the historical and environmental value of the area. Further plans developed by the Municipality of Perugia include an educational woodland, extending through the historic Torre del Molino della Catasta area. The proposed woodland will cover more than 7,000 m², further enriching the natural setting and strengthening the relationship between the bridge and its surrounding environment.

Infrastructure Designed to Create Lasting Value
The Ponte Felcino pedestrian and cycle bridge demonstrates how civil engineering can contribute to sustainable mobility, landscape enhancement and community wellbeing. By combining structural innovation, intelligent monitoring technology and respect for the natural environment, Corbo Group has delivered an infrastructure project that creates new connections and enhances the accessibility of Perugia's green spaces. A bridge designed to bring people, places and nature closer together.
